I have some news!

So, after lots of talking and tons of thinking...

We are officially trying to conceive #2!!!

Wow, I can't believe I just typed that!

I am hoping for a fall/winter baby. Let's see if we can manage to have me come back from our cruise with child and I'm not talking about our adorable existing child!

I am very excited, and, frankly, somewhat scared! On most days, having a preschooler feels very manageable. But then there are those crazy nights, those very sucky nights. We have had a number of those recently. Thank you, germs; I so hate you! Germs are the one thing I hate about preschool.

Anyways, here is to a new journey, a new chapter in our lives!

Update on us...

I realized I have been neglecting my blog again. Here is an update...

My silly child continues to pretend she is different animals! For a few weeks she was an elephant. Then she was a kitty cat. Last Friday she came home saying she is now a butterfly, a blue butterfly!

She is enjoying singing, dancing, and pretending all sorts of different things. Today she pretended that my mother's bedroom was a school and that my mom's yoga ball was the school's gate!

When we tell her it's time to go, she puts up pretend gates so we can't get to her!

She is still enjoying and loving school and so are we. In fact, we just re-enrolled her for the next academic year. She will be in the same classroom.

Geeky Entrepreneur had surgery on 12/23. His gallbladder was removed. Turnes out it was very inflamed. He still has a few stitches, but is mostly back to normal and can now eat whatever the heck he wants!

We just went on a little trip to see some friends last weekend. Ari got to play with my friend's 3-year-old. They got along very well and they are so cute together! Us grownups got to play Pandemic! So much fun! It is a cooperative board game. Check it out!

We just got tons of snow, maybe two feet? To be honest, I am horrible at checking the weather reports!

We are going on vacation in just over two weeks! Cruise of the Western Caribbean this time (Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica). Seven days away from this super cold place! I can't wait! Ari is excited and has asked if we can get another "boat that we put air into"!

I think that is about it for us. Let's see if I can get into some sort of schedule!

Lunch Update

A while back I posted about how Amor Chiquito was barely eating her lunch. Well, that has changed! Here is the update:

Amor Chiquito was not much of a breakfast person. By the second or third week of school that changed. She now has a bowl of cereal before she leaves every morning.

We learned from one of the teachers that she was, most definitely, eating. She was going for seconds at snack time, in fact!

About a week after I posted here about lunch, Amor Chiquito started wiping out her lunch completely. When she started eating her entire lunch, I was sending a quarter of a homemade waffle and fruit. I was alternating between grapes and strawberries. Here we are, three weeks later, and the kid is still in love with waffles and strawberries! I don't offer waffles at home so that she does not get sick of them. We'll send something else, eventually, but why screw with it if she is loving waffles and strawberries right now?

I used to send water. She was not drinking much. I switched to juice. I sent orange juice for a while. This week, I am sending crangrape juice and water, about a two to one ratio. Four ounces of 100% juice. No juice at home because she has juice in school and at grandma's, of course. It is working beautifully.

If you are curious, she still will not touch meat! Her protein comes from dairy and nuts. Fortunately, we now know that she is not alergic to any nuts.

Language Update: She won't shut up!

I was looking back at old posts and I was surprised when I realized how much language development we have been witnessing the past month. A month ago, Amor Chiquito was just beginning to say short sentences. Now, she is saying sentences all the time and her sentences often consist of over five words.

A few examples:

Mommy, we are in a big house.

I want Daddy come back now. (He was at work.)

(We were driving.) Daddy, otro (Spanish for other) car stopped again?!

Amor Chiquito understands “you,” “I” and “me” now. Fortunately, she still says “hold you”! I know she will figure it out eventually. I am enjoying it while it lasts!

Amor Chiquito is beginning to learn about the difference between the present and the past tenses. For example, if we ask her to do something she has already done, she will say “I did mommy.”

She is doing better answering simple questions, such as what, who and where. She does not answer why questions yet.

Pretty cool stuff! Have I said that I am loving this stage?!

Update: Amor Chiquito is going to preschool!

The long post is coming later, but, for now, here is the update!

Amor Chiquito will be attending a local Montessori school in the fall. She will be attending Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

We toured the school and sat in at a Q&A session for parents of potential students. I brought in my list on my PDA, about 15 questions! After that visit, we were sold!

Next, we filled out an application.

Once we had applied, it was time for the child visit. Amor Chiquito went in last Friday, April 8. It was simply awesome! She loved the school, she felt at ease, she fit in right away! I love when I worry for nothing!

Tuesday afternoon, we got the acceptance letter in the mail and mailed the initial payment.

My “baby” is going to school! Wow! I still can’t believe it! In no time, she will be three years old, already.

An update on us...

I had not blogged in ages. Ok, that is not true! It had been 10 days!

Last week, I was not in a good place. Several things went wrong. And, to be honest, I was feeling pretty down, but, there is no way in hell I was going to blog about how I kept feeling that my life sucked. Why? Because I know that was my I'm-depressed perspective. I know that is not true. There are too many parents out there whose kids never came home, little ones out there fighting to stay alive, etc. If I ever post something that stupid, you have permission to give me a virtual kick!

If you are curious, here is the list:

All three of us had bad, can't sleep colds. No, I don't think it was/is swine flu.

Three days in a row, Ari would not nap. Have I ever mentioned how much I need that break, the me-time to enjoy a shower, exercise, go on the computer...?

Several nights, Ari would wake up at two or three am and was unable to fall back asleep for the next four to five hours.

So, she was sleeping six to eight hours a day. Serious sleep deprivation for all...

I called the pediatrician, and, a week later, I am still waiting for her referral to someone who can help us. Very unlike her. At least things are better in the sleep department now.

My father, who is chronically ill, had pneumonia.

There is someone in my family who is very much into gossip and drama and is causing a great deal of trouble and pain. Damn it, why can’t people grow up?

The kicker... We are suspicious/afraid that someone I love very dearly is doing drugs. I will not say more about that here, but, needless to say, I am heart-broken and feeling helpless, as there is not a thing I can do, other than offer support if/when he needs it. I so wish I could wake up one morning and know, for sure, that, no, there is no or no longer a drug problem.

The family stuff is still there, but we are healthy (well, Geeky Entrepreneur is still working on it) and I am doing my best to stay positive. I owe it to my child, my husband and myself. Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes every day is helping. And, I am getting more sleep! That's a big one!

I have considered anti-depressants, but I rather try "crunchy" things before I opt to go there. So, if you have any suggestions, I am all ears! For now, I am drinking nasty chamomile tea! It is probably not doing crap, but I figured I will give it a try for a while longer.

Onto positive stuff…

Amor Chiquito is only using two diapers a day, one for naptime and one if we go out. She is starting to ask for the potty when we are out or peeing when we come home.

We have many phrases now! Her favorites: "mano (hand) teti," teti mouth," "mas teti," "daddy baby."

As you can tell, many of her phrases have to do with breastfeeding. She is still very much into it and I have no idea when she will wean herself. We night-weaned. But I am fine with daytime breastfeeding. I can see her breastfeeding until she is three. Actually, I will be surprised if she weans herself before then.

Amor Chiquito loves to point at herself and say "daddy baby"! I love it! Too cute!

Amor Chiquito is learning about puzzles and about animal sounds. Thanks, Yaminette!

She is also learning letters. Thanks for the blocks, Liz! She loves to stack them and name the letters she knows. Her favorite part is to knock them over, of course!

Amor Chiquito is very much enjoying drawing and playing with play dough.

I think that is about it... Time to nurse the baby for the last time and hope she goes to sleep. Speaking of, I can't believe she does not have a baby face anymore! I can't believe my baby is no longer a "baby"! I guess maybe I should stop calling her “the baby?” We’ll see...

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (7/25/09)

New words: Manny (as in Handy Manny, the cartoon), ama (cama, Spanish for bed), nanigh (blanket, lying down, something related to sleep…!)

I am sure there were a few more, but I am blanking out now.

Amor Chiquito is enjoying pretending games, such as putting pillows on the floor, lying down, and covering herself with a blanket, pretending she is going to sleep. Those naps last about 30 seconds!

Amor Chiquito says “se cae” (Spanish for falling” if she thinks she is about to fall, if someone else trips on something, or when Daddy runs down the stairs really fast.

Yesterday, Amor Chiquito figured it was time to remind me about that potty training stuff! Twice, she peed, took her diaper off, and handed it to me. One of the two times, after taking off the diaper, she grabbed my new underwear and put it on! It was photo-worthy – a little girl in mommy’s underwear walking around the house! Oh, if you’re wondering, no, she did not pee on the rug; I got a new diaper quickly enough!

I’ll admit that I have not done anything to help her with potty training. I really need to get started. I explained what the potty chair is for once, but did not follow through. I’ll need to do that again. Let’s see if she wants to sit on it now. She didn’t feel like it last time. She is not even two, so I am not going to force it. Forcing kids to potty train does not work, anyways.

I’ll ask her if she wants to pee on the potty when I go to the bathroom and we’ll see what happens. She always goes in there with me anyways, so I think that’s the way to go for us!

Last night, Amor Chiquito became extremely fascinated with butternut squash! She stopped eating so she could check it out. She pointed and pointed until Daddy figured out what she wanted and gave it to her. Amor Chiquito was looking at it, holding it, hugging it, trying to eat it raw! So funny! We’ll be cooking squash tomorrow tonight and letting her watch the entire time so she can see how squash goes from being the big thing she was holding to yummy orange stuff on her plate!

This morning, Abuela and I took Amor Chiquito and Jaiden, her cousin to the park across the street. Mind you, this was Ari’s second time going to the park; Geeky Entrepreneur took her early this morning, probably at 8:30am. It was so early they had the park to themselves! I got lots of nice photos of the kids on the swings and going down the slides. They also enjoyed the sprinkler park, but it was nearly impossible to get photos of them there; they would not stay still! It was nice. We don’t get to see Jaiden much. It was nice to see the kids play together, well, near each other, that is.

Amor Chiquito is still extremely afraid of strangers. She has been going to the park every day for weeks, but she still will not go down the slide if another kid is up there. I know she will do better with this eventually, but I do wonder when. It’s been almost a month, I think. Time will tell…

Amor Chiquito went grocery shopping with Geeky Entrepreneur today. I heard she got very excited when he grabbed some watermelon! She wanted some right away, so much so that she tried to bite through the saran wrap so she could get some!

I think Amor Chiquito is teething again. We’re not big fans of teething; she sleeps terrible when she is teething. She doesn’t sleep great to begin with! Whatever, it’s nothing, in the grand scheme of things. It’s part of life. In a few months, the last four molars will come through and she will have all her 20 teeth.

I think Amor Chiquito might be having nightmares. She often wakes up crying, even if we are right next to her. I tried cosleeping last night in the hopes that we would sleep better, but, as usual, it was just as bad as having her in the crib, if not worse. I lost track of how many times she woke up and definitely lost track of how many times she jumped on to nibble.

I think that is about it for this week. Let’s see what this coming week has in store for us. Lots of fun mischief, I’m betting.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (7/19/09)

It has been weeks since my last update. Let’s see how much I can remember…

New words: shy (outside), slide, ri (rice), bobobi (broccoli), jew (juice), baby, yes, sho (hot), up, down, se cae (Spanish for fall), papo (diaper), ow (house)

There are many more, but I can’t remember right now.

Oh, she calls corn cereal! Maybe because they sort of look like Kix? No clue!

Amor Chiquito now understands the difference between hot and cold.

When her food is hot, Amor Chiquito will tell you and proceed to blow on it!

Amor Chiquito used to call rice food, but now she calls it rice. She loves white rice! She’d live on rice if we let her!

Amor Chiquito has become quite the outdoors person. I find this strange, in a way, because neither Geeky Entrepreneur nor I love being outdoors as much as she does. But it is good for her, so we do it, particularly Geeky Entrepreneur.

There is a park across the street from us and it was recently redone. It kicks butt! There is a section for kids ages 2-5. Amor Chiquito loves going to the park every day, day and night! She is lucky; Daddy brings her almost every morning and every evening.

There are three slides. She has a favorite, the whindy slide, of course! That we agree with her on! She also loves the swings.

There is a mini water park. She is slowly becoming a fan. At first, she would only stare. Then, she’d get her hands and feet wet. Now, she is coming home completely soaked!

One of Amor Chiquito’s most recent hobbies is to play with the hose. (Thanks, Geeky Entrepreneur; you’ve unleashed a monster!) When we go “shy” (outside), she brings us to the hose. She enjoys making sure Daddy is thoroughly soaked! But she doesn’t want Daddy to return the favor!

Speaking of Daddy, Amor Chiquito is a much bigger fan of him, which makes me no end of happy! She used to only call me when she woke up; now, she calls both of us. She is always looking for him, calling his name, running after him… So cute!

Other hobbies: wash her hands and brush her teeth over and over again.

A funny story – Amor Chiquito knows why people sit on toilets. Consequently, if we go to the bathroom, she will say “mommy/daddy peepee”! When you come out of the bathroom, she announces to the world that you went peepee! It felt a little strange yesterday to be at my mother-in-law’s, surrounded by the in-laws, and having all of them hear that I had just peed! Whatever, she is cute as can be!

Amor Chiquito saw a little bit of Daddy playing his video game. Not a big deal to some, but I really don’t want her to get interested in video games. Also, and most importantly, I don’t want her seeing violence of any sort. Unfortunately, she was fascinated and so she wants to be in there with him while he is playing. Today, she got the X-box controller and made Geeky Entrepreneur’s character walk around. She then found a grenade or something. That was the end of that…

So much more to say, but I am completely blanking out right now. I am not feeling well. I can’t eat much. I’m in pain. It might be my gall bladder. It sucks. Hopefully we will know soon.

I want the pain to go away, of course, but I am hoping I don’t need surgery. Amor Chiquito and I have never spent a night apart. She still wants to nurse in the middle of the night. So if I need surgery, it will suck big time.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (6/22/09)

Behind schedule, but here is the weekly update on our silly kid!

New words: teeth, mouth, nose, baby, house, flower, car, papas (Spanish for French fries), food, hi

First phrase ever: mas cheese

Last Monday was one of those days packed with mischief:
fights with the cousin
coming home, looking for Daddy, running to the front door, holding the door nub, saying “doggy, doggy”
taking off in mid-diaper change and peeing on her chair (not the potty chair)

Every time we pull into the driveway, she wants to go see all the “doggies” in the neighborhood!

If she has not seen Daddy all day, when I tell her Daddy is coming, she gets very excited and starts saying “daddy, daddy”! When he walks in, she runs to him, says hi, and gives him hugs!

When Abuela is cooking, she walks in the kitchen, points at the pot, says “food,” and says “mmm”! I heard that today she would not leave the kitchen! She lied down on the floor to enjoy her milk and wait for the rice!

Every time we are at a drive-through, she thinks we are getting French fries. Yes, I’m big into her eating healthy, but she does know and love French fries, I must admit.

Not sure if this was a coincidence or not, but a while ago she grabbed two socks from a laundry basket and they matched. There were many socks and they were not in pairs, believe you me!

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (6/14/09)

Nothing big to write about. My memory is pathetic; I can't remember anything these days!

There are some new words, but I am still trying to figure out what they mean. Amor Chiquito is doing lots of "substitution." In the language world, this refers to when a child makes up her/his own word because she/he is unable to pronounce the real word. If a sound is being used consistently, it counts as a word, even though it is not a real word for us grownups.

When we come home, almost always, Amor Chiquito wants to walk around the neighborhood to look at the "doggies"!

Amor Chiquito is exposed to lots of things at Abuela's house that she does not see here, mainly girly stuff. I'm just not into lotions, makeup, or hair products. Just the basics for me! A few days back, she went in Abuela's room, grabbed the body spray and sprayed herself. She then put lipstick on herself. Lastly, she asked for "tata" (lotion). Makes Abuela very proud!

Something new: she is drinking more milk (cow milk, that is). That does not mean she is weaning, though. To her, they are two separate things. And, frankly, I'm in agreement. I'm much better than a cow, thank you very much! I know what I put into my body and my milk gives her immune system a boost. When she is sick, she can still drink mommy milk, whereas that is not true about cow milk.

Oops, did not mean for that to turn into a little rant. I just get frustrated when people say things like "why haven't you weaned her already? She should be drinking more milk. She won't eat good until you wean her." They imply that cow milk is somehow healthier than the milk my boobs make. What kind of crap is that?

K, off my soapbox.

Amor Chiquito has learned to take the cap off her sippy cups. Consequently, she drinks her milk with a straw now.

Everything at Abuela's is cooler than the stuff at home! That includes the disposable diapers that my nephew wears. When we say diaper time, she runs and grabs a disposable diaper. Guess what? She is incredibly alergic to them. In 5 minutes, she is itching badly, crying, etc. Unfortunately, she has not connected the dots.

We used disposable diapers for 10 months, always Pampers. We never had a rash. So I wonder if there are different chemicals in the different brands? The diapers at Abuela's are not Pampers.

Back to the weekly update, we met with the early intervention therapist last Friday. Nothing new, really. This time Geeky Entrepreneur was able to join us, so he got to hear the suggestions directly from her, which was helpful. Basically, the boildown is that we should use brief phrases, lots of repetition, and lots of narrating what she is doing. Some time between 50 and 75 words, she will start saying phrases. We have about 30 words right now, so hopefully we'll be hearing some phrases soon.

I guess that was it for this week. On to get ready to start another crazy week.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (6/7/09)

Lots of fun mischief this week!

New words: bow (hello), titi (Spanish for aunty), house, mi (milk) tata (lotion)

It is very fascinating how children make up their own words when the real word is too hard for them to say. How “lotion” and “tata” are similar is beyond me, but whatever works!

Amor Chiquito is spending lots of time at Abuela’s this month because I am doing a summer course. She is enjoying herself over there quite a bit.

Amor Chiquito grabbed Abuela’s lipstick, took the cap off, and started putting lipstick on her lips. She then grabbed a bottle of perfume, aimed it at her neck and tried to spray unsuccessfully. I hear she added spraying sound effects!

Amor Chiquito grabbed Abuela’s coke from the coffee table and started drinking. Abuela put it away and brought Amor Chiquito with her to the bathroom so she could clean. Suddenly, Amor Chiquito was gone. She went to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and grabbed the can of coke again! My daughter finally tasted coke; that was a first!

One day, I was at my mother’s and I was so tired I fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up, there was lotion on my hair! Turns out she put lotion on my hair multiple times. My mother not only knew, but, in fact, provided the lotion for the mischief! You should have seen the grin on her face when I asked how Amor Chiquito got a hold of the “tata”!

Amor Chiquito loves to help us. Today, she put all her diapers, one by one, in the dryer. I didn’t have to bend over once, works for me!

I ask for hugs and she says no. She’ll give Daddy hugs almost any time! Too cute!

Amor Chiquito is getting better and better about telling us what she would like to eat or drink: shia 9(cereal), mi (milk), chee (cheese), bah (bread), (papa (Spanish for French fries), agua (water), etc.

Amor Chiquito is now able to get on the dining chairs unassisted. She sits at the table like a big girl and does a great job eating her food. She is not interested in using her booster seat anymore! We have compromised on having her sit on the booster, so she is higher up and can reach her food better, and eating at the table, rather than using the tray that came with the booster seat.

Amor Chiquito is definitely testing her boundaries every now and then, but, thus far, I feel like we are doing well with the transition to the “terrible two’s.” Fortunately, everyone who is a caregiver to her (my mother, Geeky Entrepreneur, and myself) is on the same page. I feel very strongly that that makes a big difference. I don’t know how things will be six months from now, but, so far so good. Basically, what we are doing is lots of positive reinforcement, relocating her when she is doing something inappropriate/dangerous, and trying to be consistent about saying “ut-oh” when she is doing anything inappropriate. We briefly explain why not and if she insists on throwing a tantrum, we try not to give her attention until she is done with the tantrum.

Things are stable in the sleep department. She gets up twice every night, but she goes down very easily and quickly. She is doing a great job with her daytime naps and sleeping on a toddler bed at Abuela’s. I am very excited about the fact that she is consistently sleeping better because it means that we will finally feel comfortable about spending a night or two away from home.

I think that is all for now.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (5/30/09)

Not much to say this week. Little mischief, thanks to the fever.

Oh, wait, I lied! Not too many stories, but the two stories are big ones, for me, anyways!

Amor Chiquito just learned/got tall enough to get on the dining chairs independently. Once she is on the chair, it’s easy to get on the table. Once she’s on the table, it’s easy to stand on the table! So, that’s the new thing. I leave her alone for 30 seconds and when I go back to the living room, she is sitting on the table! She does not understand that it is dangerous yet. When will she get that? I have no clue!

Her other new hobby: unplugging and plugging back in the TV. I have also found her trying to remove the outlet covers.

Parenting as a nearly blind woman is interesting. I have to be after her constantly. If we are on opposite sides of a room and she starts checking out outlets, for example, I won’t notice. It makes it hard to get anything done around the house because this kid never stops! I wish she could transfer one-fifth of her energy to me!

Life is interesting with her! That being said, I wouldn’t change a thing! In fact, I am officially losing my mind: I have started thinking about #2!

New words: baba (bottle), chee (cheek)

Amor Chiquito loves pointing at body parts and saying what they are called or having you tell her what they are called if she does not know the word yet.

Amor Chiquito has been fever-free all day! She still complains about her leg, though.

Sleep woes are back. Yesterday, Amor Chiquito did not nap all day. Today, we tried four times before she finally went down for a nap. She went down at 2:00 and usually she goes down between 12 and 12:30. What did it? Bubbles, of course! She would fall asleep on us, would stay down for a few minutes, then she would get up, cry, jump, call my mother and I, you name it… It was hard. I was really upset about it. It felt like we had taken 20 steps backwards. I hope that it gets better soon.

On the up-side, she went down easily tonight and last night was much better than every other night this week. The bad thing: she was ready to rock and roll at 6am! We were not! I’m not a morning person. Well, I guess I am now!

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (5/24/09)

Done with school for the time being, until June 1st. One week of freedom! Let’s see if I can get some blogging done!

New words: ball, balloon, cereal, eye, ear, mouth

Phrases are next. Looking forward to that.

Earlier today, Amor Chiquito dropped about half a cup’s worth of cereal on the floor! On the upside, she does a great job cleaning up! Geeky Entrepreneur said “clean up” and gave her a trash can. She picked up the cereal, put it in the trash can, and returned the trash can to daddy.

Amor Chiquito has a great deal of fun soaping herself up and soaping us up while she is at it! Soap or bubbles, it does not matter!

Some hobbies apparently are here to stay: Amor Chiquito loves bubbles of any type: bubble bath, blowing bubbles, anything bubbles! She also still loves keys! She loves to stand on her chair so she can reach the door and put the key in.

Her latest favorite thing to do is to point at a body part and say its name or wait for you to tell her what it is called.

We went to the grocery store the other day. When we were approaching the deli, Amor Chiquito said: cheeese"! Like mother like daughter!

Amor Chiquito helps wipe herself when we change her diaper! It gets pretty interesting when there is poop! But that is how she will learn. So there are yet more hand-washing sessions throughout the day!

Amor Chiquito has not been feeling well lately. Not sure what it is yet, maybe a cold. She has been particularly booboholic lately! We'll have to work on that. I am more than happy to breastfeed her, but this is getting to be a little too much! If you have any suggestions on how to get an almost 2-year-old to stop acting like the world is ending because she didn’t get to nibble for the tenth time today, please share! I tell her milk all done and I do my best to distract her. Sometimes it works; sometimes it does not.

This Thursday, we will be meeting with the early intervention therapist to officially start working on Amor Chiquito's language delay. She will be coming over once a week for now.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito (5/16/09)

It's been two weeks since my last update. Amor Chiquito has spent a lot of time at Abuela’s. It’s been crazy. I’ve missed my baby! So glad I'm almost done. Should be done by Tuesday.

New words: baby, doggy, beh (bread), cheese, bye, tree, bow (bless you).
Favorite words this week: doggy, bye, cheese, bless you.

Every time she hears a dog bark, she says "doggy" and runs to the door to look.

Amor Chiquito enjoys saying bye to the cars driving by. It gets old and loud after a while, but it’s pretty cute!

She says bye when someone is about to leave or about to get off the phone.

Amor Chiquito says bless you to anyone who sneezes, including herself! You better say thank you, or else... She'll keep saying bless you!

Last week it was raining one night. She kept looking at the rain and saying "awa, awa, awa…"!

Amor Chiquito goes on a walk with Geeky Entrepreneur almost every morning. She loves their walks, particularly a few days back when she got to walk on puddles! What does Daddy has to say about it? "Gotta let her have fun!" True enough!

Amor Chiquito has gotten very good at jumping! She loves to jump a great deal!

A few days back, my brother came over to give Geeky Entrepreneur a haircut. Geeky Entrepreneur was not wearing his glasses during the haircut, so Amor Chiquito was easily able to get into mischief! Geeky Entrepreneur let me sleep in that morning. Suddenly, I woke up to "mommy, mommy!" There she was, right next to me, about to climb into bed with me. She got all the way up the stairs without Geeky Entrepreneur noticing! I asked if he knew. He said no. My brother responded "she's been up and down those stairs 3 times since I started cutting your hair!" Who's the blind one here?!

I must say: there is nothing better to wake up to than my little girl saying "mommy, mommy." Definitely the most beautiful sound I can hear when I wake up.

Something else I really enjoy: after being apart for hours, when we first see each other, Amor Chiquito runs to me, says "mommy, mommy," and pulls up my shirt so she can nurse! Yeah, call me weird. I love breastfeeding still! It's our way of reconnecting, and, most importantly, she still gets the immune system boost.

I am really loving this stage. She is very interactive. She has a mind of her own. She has likes and dislikes. Her language is developing literally every day.

More soon, I promise!

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito: 5/2/2009

Here is the weekly update.

Favorite word this week: nyo (no)
Old words that she had not said in a while: daddy, thank you, and nana (banana).
New words: bubbos (bubbles)

Amor Chiquito loves bringing my purse around with her. A few days back, I went out with my mom and she stayed home with Daddy. When I opened the cell phone pocket, I found one of her Easter window stickers!

Amor Chiquito is not very fund of being in her car seat lately. One time, she threw quite the fit! She was screaming pretty loudly. Abuela tried to distract her by singing a song, a song that Amor Chiquito typically likes to dance to. But, not that time! Instead, what Abuela got was "nyo" from a very angry child! Abuela and I thought the way she said no was histerical! We could not stop laughing! Eventually, Amor Chiquito decided she was no longer angry. So, the new thing was first I dance, then I say no! Too funny! I wish I had a video of that!

The blueberry obsession continues! I am very happy that my daughter is enjoying healthy food, but we have spent over $30 in blueberries this week! No, I am not exagerating! She is going through a small case each day! I got tired of going to Stop & Shop every other day, so we bought in bulk last time!

I made the mistake of not pumping or having Daddy offer her a bottle for a month or so when she was two months old. Consequently, Amor Chiquito decided she did not want the bottle. The next time she accepted a bottle she was nine months or so. At that point, she was pretty good with the sippy cup, so I figured why bother with a bottle if I'd have to wean her from it at age one anyways?

Well, guess what? There are bottles at Abuela's house because my nephew still drinks out of them. Guess who opens the refrigerator, grabs the bottle, and points at the milk? Yes, my kid! And, guess who drank eight ounces of milk from a bottle today at Abuela's? Yes, you're right, my kid again!

My response? What the heck! Do I have to go buy my 19.5 month old child a bottle when she should not have been using one for the past seven months? I am not saying that the day a child turns one the bottle should go away completely. But I do know that at that time the weaning process should begin. And, furthermore, I know that this does not make sense! The kid will be two soon! She knows how to drink from a sippy, from a straw, from a grown-up's cup... So, what then?

Abuela's logic is "if I give her the bottle, she'll drink milk. If she drinks milk, I keep her here longer!"

Who can argue with that?! It's not like The Geeky Entrepreneur and I do not enjoy the break every now and then.

So, to wrap up the bottle story, I have decided that if she wants to drink from a bottle at Abuela's once a week, so be it. But I am not buying bottles for her to drink milk at home. If she wants to keep refusing to drink it from a sippy and prefers to spoonfeed herself milk, so be it, but I'm not buying bottles! Well, I might buy one for her to keep at Abuela's, I suppose!

As far as sleep, all I'll say is it was great while it lasted! She has been getting up at least twice during the last few nights. One night she got up five times. No idea what is going on yet. Maybe the tooth that is about to come through, maybe not. I don't know.

Lastly, the early intervention agency the pediatrician referred us to is evaluating Amor Chiquito on Tuesday morning. I am looking forward to the report, but I am not very hopeful that they will say anything new in regards to the sleep situation.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito

Amor Chiquito has been quite impish this week! I am enjoying watching her figure out so many new things. I am loving everything about this stage, except the tantrums! Yes, tantrums are here, and, I know they are here to stay! Welcome, terrible two's!

New words: no and mano (Spanish for hand).

You ask her something, anything, it's always "no"! You ask someone else something, she answers for the person, "no"!

I got her a picnic table yesterday. Today, she had a snack on our porch at her new table, spent some time walking around the house, ran back and forth from the swing to our car, trying to put the key in so she could unlock the door, and spent a fair bit of time on the swing, of course!

Amor Chiquito is enjoying the slide Abuela got her. She was confused at first, but quickly learned how to get on it. She wants to go down the slide butt first every now and then!

She is enjoying her swing a great deal. It's her favorite thing to do, for the time being.

Speaking of the swing, last Tuesday she threw her first tantrum because she wanted to go outside and go on the swing. I said no because it was cold and rainy. She either did not understand that or did not care. The Geeky Entrepreneur figured he'd try to turn it into a learning experience. He thought if she sat on the wet swing, she'd get it. Well, guess what? That didn't work! She didn't give a crap! I'm guessing she is too little to understand that. She enjoyed being on the swing and proceeded to throw yet another tantrum when The Geeky Entrepreneur brought her in the house. To be honest, even though we had read "Love and Logic," a book on discipline, how to raise respectful and responsible kids, etc., I was not prepared for this! I guess it's time to do some thinking and decide how we will be handling tantrums! Suggestions are welcomed! It makes sense that tantrums have begun. The terrible two's are approaching.

So, back to the tantrum! I explained why we had to come in, tried distracting her, giving her space to figure it out, ignoring her, you name it… I got kicked. I got slapped. Even the boobies got hit, despite the fact that she can't live without them! Eventually, she decided she wanted mama milk. Then, the tantrum was over, she took a bath, and life was great again. My sweet baby was back!

Since then, we have had a handful of smaller tantrums, all because of the swing, because of keys, or because she does not want us to change her diaper.

Amor Chiquito and her 2-year-old cousin got to spend some time together last weekend. I noticed that neither of them was interesting in sharing anything. At one point, my nephew was about to sit where Amor Chiquito had been sitting. She got mad and made sure he wouldn't eat her food or have any of her water. Sounds terrible, I know! I know it's a kid thing, but I felt like there must be something I can do to teach her about sharing. A few days later, I got the weekly child development newsletter from Baystate Medical Center, where I gave birth. Apparently, children do not really understand sharing until they are three or so. That made me feel better. But, that means the next year will be very interesting for Amor Chiquito and her cousin! Well, they won't care; it will be interesting for those of us watching!

On to cute stuff! Amor Chiquito gives us lots of unsolicited hugs! Often, she'll start running towards you with her arms wide open! She just learned to blow kisses, so we get kisses too!

She continues to get better at spoon feeding herself. In fact, she won't let anyone feed her these days! I am waiting for the day when she will say, "I can do it myself"!

Amor Chiquito just learned to put her shoes on! She had been trying, but they were often backwards, as in she tried to put her toes in the heel part. One day, I noticed she had both shoes on, no socks on. I didn't do it and Daddy was working.

For a while, she was enjoying dressing herself, especially if it was new clothes that she got to remove stickers off of. Now, sometimes, she just does not want to get dressed! Today, suddenly, I realized she was in her diaper, shirt and pants were gone! Then, five minutes later, the diaper was gone too! Maybe she wanted to take a bath?!

Oh, how could I forget…? Quick sleep update: most nights, she has slept 6-8 hours uninterrupted. So, we end up getting up only once in the middle of the night. We are still dealing with her having a hard time going back to sleep on some nights. Overall, I am very pleased with the progress she has made during the last week or so.

I think that is it for this week.

I have not forgotten about cloth diapers. I will post more about that when I get through the end of the semester insanity.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito

Amor Chiquito is 19 months today.

This week, she was quite busy, lots of fun mischief!

Two new words: wawa (agua, Spanish for water) and keys.

Speaking of keys, that is her newest hobby: playing with our keys. She asks for them every day, multiple times a day. She knows that mine live in the diaper bag, so she points at the diaper bag and says "keys." She gets so excited if she hears keys!

Last Monday, we went to a doctor's appointment and her favorite stuffed animal came with us. When we were about to walk out of the doctor's office, she realized she did not have the stuffed animal. She stopped, looked back, and said "Momo." She remembers the things that are important to her!

Speaking of Momo, I got Amor Chiquito a dress for Easter. The dress came with an identical dress for a doll. I put it on Momo. If you know him, you know he was not pleased at all about wearing it! That, of course, was the point!

For those of you who do not know, The Geeky Entrepreneur has stuffed animals with personalities, voices, stories, you name it… Momo is one of them. He is an imp, a pain in the butt. He talks about "world domination," says humans are ugly because they are bald, among many other crazy things. Well, Momo has become Amor Chiquito's favorite stuffie. He hates the idea of sleeping next to a human, "human cooties and all," but he figures he will make that huge sacrifice because she is his future! Yes, we're crazy, I know!

Amor Chiquito has a unique way of putting on her sweaters. She puts it on the floor, lies down, and puts her arms in it! She is quite creative! She certainly did not learn that technique from us!

We have an old swing on our backyard, but it is not baby-friendly. I got her a baby swing (the type that looks like a car seat and you attach it to a traditional children swing) yesterday. She loved it from the minute she saw it. She was dragging it around the house, sitting in it, asking me to strap her in… Once she learned what the swing was really for, she loved it even more! She was smiling, laughing, giggling the whole time! We have an adorable recording of her in the swing, holding Daddy's keys, and laughing!

Amor Chiquito has upgraded to the big people tub, as opposed to the toddler tub she had been using. She has enjoyed bubble baths two nights in a row, Geeky Entrepreneur's idea. She had a lot of fun.

She has been enjoying blackberries and blueberries a great deal the last few weeks. I got a container of organic blueberries a few days back. In 24 hours, it was gone! Mom and dad never had any! I don't blame her; they were delicious. Abuela was not too thrilled, though; she was on diaper duty the next day because I was in school!

Earlier today, The Geeky Entrepreneur and Amor Chiquito went on a walk. I heard she did a great job and a had great deal of fun walking, holding Daddy's hand, holding his keys on her other hand, pointing at things and saying words that we are not able to comprehend yet. When they returned, she ran across the driveway and started saying, "mommy, mommy"!

I put her on our bathroom scale. At first, she didn't get it. I had to try a few times. Eventually, she wanted to get weighed over and over again! Once I said "all done," she took off, naked, and pooped on the floor! The joys of parenthood!

I asked the pediatrician for a referral to a specialist to try and figure out what we can do to improve our sleep situation. She recommended an early intervention agency. I will be meeting with someone from the agency and several therapists will be evaluating Amor Chiquito. Not sure if they will have helpful suggestions on the sleep issue, but, in the worst case scenario, I will know if she might be a bit delayed on language or if she is fine.

In the meantime, she is sleeping for longer stretches of time and only breastfeeding once at night. I know she should not need us or breast milk at all, but this is progress for us, so I'll take it.

By the way, Thursday night, I went to bed at 8pm and stayed in bed for 11 hours. I nursed her once, but The Geeky Entrepreneur took care of her the one time she woke up. Wow, I felt like a new woman Friday morning! I should go to bed at 8pm more often. But that just feels wrong! Then again, if I want to feel rested, I'll get over it!

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito

Just like last week, I am blanking out! But the teeth will be coming through soon and hopefully more sleep for us will come soon too!

Amor Chiquito can open Abuela's fridge. She loves to look in the fridge and grab things, particularly the little cups of fruit that Abuela feeds her.

She enjoys grabbing our keys and pretending she will unlock doors with them. Her bedroom door does not lock and you can't unlock doors with keys when you are in the house, but never you mind that!

Abuela, Amor Chiquito, and I went shoe shopping the other day. Amor Chiquito wanted to keep trying on shoes! She was not pleased about returning the shoes that did not fit! She did not want to wear her shoes, after seeing all the different shoes at the store!

She also enjoys wearing her new clothes! A few days back, she saw her new pajamas, took off her shirt, started trying to put on the shirt, came to me for help, and later let me know that she wanted the tag to come off.

She is doing something very cute – I say "hugs" and I put my arms out. She runs over and puts her head on my chest and hugs me. I say "hugs for Daddy" and she runs over and hugs him.

Even cuter – she just started opening her arms, waiting for us to go over and hug her!

Every now and then, she will come over and hug our legs, or whatever she can reach!

Have I mentioned how awesome it is to wake up in the mornings to your child calling "mommy, mommy, mommy…"! No alarm clock can beat that!

We went out for breakfast this morning and I was noticing how well behaved she was. She happily sat on her chair for a while. She played with my keys while we waited for our food. She enjoyed her asiago bread and her cold water. I did not realize at first, or, I took it for granted, but people are right – our daughter is a happy, sweet, adventuresome, well-behaved child. We have had bad restaurant episodes, of course, but, typically, this happens when she is tired. So we do our best to avoid putting ourselves in that situation.

Lately, she seems to be going through a phase where she is not very thrilled about Mommy leaving her. Typically, she is thrilled to stay at Abuela's, so this is unusual. I realized that I have not spent much time with her lately. In fact, I realized that I had not even fed her much during the last two days. I am wrapping up my last semester and so I have been quite busy with school. I am very much looking forward to being done for many reasons, the main reason being that I am missing spending time at home with my Amor Chiquito.

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito

Not much to say this week, or, more accurately, I can't remember much. Thanks to the 3 teeth that are on the way, Amor Chiquito has been sleeping terrible. And, of course, that means we are sleeping terrible, too, so I don't remember much! Fortunately, after these teeth, we have 4 molars and we are all done with teething!

I have noticed a correlation: when she sleeps poorly, she eats poorly. She is not eating much at all these days, not even with Abuela. She typically eats the best with my mother, but that is not the case this week.

So, we are very much looking forward to the end of this phase, of course. It is very exhausting and frustrating, but I keep reminding myself that I have nothing to complain about. She is here and she is healthy, in theory. Every now and then, I wonder if she is as healthy as the pediatrician says. She has slept poorly for most of her life. So I wonder if there is something wrong we are not aware of.

But, on to a fun topic.

Amor Chiquito likes to put her chair in front of the television. She stands on it so she can grab the remote control. Can you spell brain development?!

She likes to put stuffed animals on her booster seat, strap them in, and put the tray in front of them.

She loves to help us. She likes putting away groceries, emptying the dishwasher, taking clothes out of the dryer and putting them in the basket, among other things.

She loves looking out the window.

She loves ringing the doorbell each and every time we come home.

She loves bathtime, particularly soaping herself up.

She is not eating much, but if she sees a piece of cake or a milk shake, she definitely wants some and will eat it! Like mother like daughter, I suppose! I'm just wondering why she won't eat more cheese and why she is a self-proclaimed vegetarian! No clue where she got the whole being a vegetarian thing!

I can't think of anything else; I guess it is time for bed!

The Adventures of Amor Chiquito

Here is the weekly update on what Amor Chiquito is up to!

One of her favorite things to do these days is to bring her chair to the kitchen door. Once there, she stands on the chair and works on trying to figure out how to unlock and open the door. She has not succeeded yet. I am happy about that, for now.

Another thing she loves to do is to sit on the floor with her activity table. She puts a pillow against the wall, sits on the floor resting her back on the pillow, and puts the table in front of her. I kept wondering who she was imitating. It turns out that when the Crazy Entrepreneur is in her room waiting for her to fall asleep, he sits on the floor with his laptop and a pillow behind his back. Like father like daughter!

Amor Chiquito also enjoys dancing and clapping any chance she gets! She dances to any song, any commercial, standing, sitting, even while lying down! The Crazy Entrepreneur loves to dance with her! Very cute! Any time she sees other people clapping, she claps too. If we say "muy bien" or "good job," she claps, just like we do! She claps whether we clap or not!

I got her her first swimming pool this week! She is enjoying dragging it around the house and sitting in it, even though there is no water in there. A few days back, we were going out and she wanted to bring the pool with her!

When we change her diaper, she almost always wants a wipe. She either uses it to wipe herself or she wipes down the coffee table with it! If she feels the wipe is not doing the job, she pores some of her water on the coffee table to ensure it is cleaned properly! Yes, the wood is getting damaged! Oh well, bigger things in life to worry about.

She loves washing her hands. She also loves drying them. If you do not offer her the towel, she will go get it and bring it to you! If the towel is not there, she gets frustrated! Today, I showed her that it is ok; she can dry her hands with a paper towel instead.

She loves putting diapers on her, I mean, her father's, stuffed animals (more on the stuffies later!). She just asked for help to put her pink spring jacket on Momo, her favorite stuffie.

Once Momo was in the jacket, she went around the house with groceries in her little shopping cart and Momo on her hip, just like we carry her!

We have a new word: "anana" (banana)!

She is getting quite good at spoon feeding herself. She loves doing so. In fact, she prefers to feed herself than to have a grownup do so.

Teeth 14 and 15 are coming through any day now. We are having rough nights again because of this, but we are almost 75% of the way there. I am not complaining. Teething will be done soon.

She is getting into mischief and the Crazy Entrepreneur is cooking, so I must run!
